Notes on the above statistics:

  • The Dewey Animal Shelter serves Clark County and the Animal Foundation serves Las Vegas.
  • Animal statistics were received from the animal control departments of the municipalities represented.
  • Population data is as of July 1st, the midpoint on the year and was received from Clark County Comprehensive Planning Department.
  • The number of animals killed per 1000 residents summarizes data. This is a nationally accepted method of comparing various localities' pet overpopulation problems. It eliminates the vagaries of and various interpretations of what animals are "adoptable", helps offset population growth distortions and levels the playing field when comparing euthanasia rates.
  • The local trend is not encouraging. Clark County's euthanasia rate only improved from 16.2 animals killed per 1000 residents in 1998 to 16.1 in 1999. The city of North Las Vegas had the highest euthanasia rate but made the greatest improvement from a rate of 22.7 per 1000 residents in 1998 to 20.1 in 1999.
  • Animal People, a magazine that tracks these statistics, reports that the US city with the lowest euthanasia rate was San Francisco with 3.9 animals killed per 1000 residents. New Jersey has the lowest rate of any state with 3 animals killed per 1000 residents statewide.
